YOUR CREATOR CHALLENGE

Grow your own big idea.

Every invention begins with a question. Choose a step to begin.

IMAGINATION STARTER

What would you help your neighborhood grow?

Draw a garden helper. What problem would it solve? Label three things your invention would need.

Look closely—the garden’s smallest helpers matter, too.

As bees carry pollen from blossom to blossom, they help strawberry plants grow fruit. Small wings can make a big difference.

04 / ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rooted in Roxbury.
Inspired by possibility.

Tyissha Jones-Horner is the author and creator behind Jahmez & J-Bot and Roxbury Ink Press.

A Boston-born author, technology professional, mother, and grandmother of eight, Tyissha grew up in Orchard Park in Roxbury. Her stories bring together her love of family, her neighborhood roots, and her belief in the difference people can make when they care for their community.

She earned a degree in Information Technology and Business from the Kennedy College of Science at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her background in technology, design, and community service shapes the way she brings learning and storytelling together.

Why she wrote the book

Inspired by her grandson Jahmez and the curiosity of her grandchildren, Tyissha wrote Jahmez & J-Bot to help children imagine themselves as inventors, problem solvers, and people who can make a difference. Through her growing family of stories, she celebrates Black and Brown children, the communities that nurture them, and the possibilities that open when every child has room to create.
